Maha RERA de-registers nearly 19,000 property brokers amid compliance push

The Maharashtra Real Estate Regulatory Authority (MahaRERA) has de-registered a staggering 18,693 property brokers for various reasons, including failure to renew licenses and non-completion of mandatory training and certification.

The move is part of the authority’s ongoing efforts to ensure greater transparency and professionalism in the real estate sector. Of the total de-registered agents, around 2,463 are from Mumbai city, 5,538 are from Mumbai suburban areas, 4,303 are from Thane, and 3,476 are from Pune.

Out of a total of 50,673 agents registered with MahaRERA since its inception in May 2017, over 31,980 registrations remain active. The cancellations reflect a strong regulatory push to bring discipline to the intermediary segment, which plays a critical role in property transactions across the state.

MahaRERA mandates that all agents undergo training and certification in key aspects of the Real Estate (Regulation and Development) Act, 2016. This includes understanding and communicating essential information to homebuyers, such as the model sale agreement, allotment letter, carpet area, and the defect liability period.
Many of the de-registered agents reportedly failed to comply with these requirements, while others have allowed their licenses to lapse as they may be operating only in the secondary resale market that does not fall under the jurisdiction of the regulator.
